Home » Where is asbestos

If your home or building was built or renovated before 1990, it likely contains asbestos. Asbestos was used in thousands of products, and it’s found in more places than most people expect.

Common locations

  • Roofing and exterior: corrugated roof sheets, ridge capping, guttering, downpipes, eaves, external wall cladding, fences
  • Wet areas: wall linings behind and beneath tiles in bathrooms, kitchens and laundries; bath and shower surrounds
  • Interior: ceilings and walls; vinyl floor tiles; backing on sheet flooring; insulation
  • Services and fittings: pipe lagging and insulation; flues; pipes; electrical cupboards; gaskets and seals
  • Other: window mastic, expansion joints, adhesives, paints, textured coatings

This isn’t an exhaustive list. Asbestos was used in more than 3,000 products across residential, commercial and industrial settings.

You cannot confirm asbestos just by looking at a material. Only laboratory testing of a sample can tell you definitively. The next step is getting it assessed safely.
