Asbestos waste must go to a place authorised to receive it.

Before you go

Find a licensed facility and call ahead – not all sites accept asbestos at all times, and most have specific procedures for wrapping, labelling and drop-off.

From your home

Find a landfill authorised to accept asbestos waste and call ahead – not all sites accept asbestos waste at all times, and most have specific procedures for wrapping, labelling and drop-off.

From a workplace or commercial site

Asbestos waste from commercial, industrial or trade sources is classified as reportable priority waste(opens in new tab) under the Environment Protection Regulations 2021.

Stricter controls apply:

  • You will need an EPA-issued permission to transport it.
  • All movements must be logged through Waste Tracker(opens in new tab).
  • Missing or incomplete Waste Tracker records can result in fines.

Victorian Government agencies must upload Waste Tracker records into AIRSystem.

If you’re hiring someone to dispose of it

Ask your removalist or waste transporter for a Waste Tracker record. This proves your waste was taken to an authorised facility. If asbestos waste isn’t disposed of lawfully, you may be held responsible.

What you must never do

  • Don’t put asbestos in skips or household bins.
  • Don’t bury asbestos on your property or anywhere else.
  • Don’t dump asbestos in any location not licensed to receive it.

Illegal disposal carries significant penalties. If you've found asbestos someone else has dumped, report it to your local council(opens in new tab) or EPA Victoria(opens in new tab).
